John Randolph 4e06a85d55 encode unicode strings as utf-8 before sending over the wire. ...

surprisingly (to me, at least), sending encoded utf-8 without
escaping is legal according to:
  http://www.w3.org/Protocols/rfc2616/rfc2616-sec4.html#sec4.2
...and also works properly in testing.
